Personal (Non)Trivia
I was born and raised in Turkey. I moved to the US for my Ph.D in 2013, right after the glorious summer of Gezi Protests. As Charles Dickens once wrote, “[i]t was the best of times, it was the worst of times.”
I was raised by three mothers (one biological mother and two aunts). Their mother, my grandmother, was my favorite person of all times.
Currently, I live in Ithaca, NY with my partner, dog, and plants.
I am one of the proud guardians of the Shiba Inu, Quintessential. Quinny is an awesome dog (she is kind of a cat too), except when she eats poop (#dogshaming).
I am determined to turn my house into an indoor jungle although I don’t have much of an idea about gardening. My partner seems to be okay with it and the plants seem to be surviving my care.
I hate the words journey, adventure, and special. I think that they are too liberally used both exaggerating and diminishing the importance of the mundane and ordinary. For example, one’s life can still be valuable and important although it is not a special adventurous journey.
I am not sure what I think about astrology. But I am a textbook Sagittarius. So, it must be true.
When I was little, I wanted to be an Egyptologist. But my mom convinced me that I wouldn’t make any money. Instead, I chose the lucrative profession of academia.
When I was littler, I wanted to be a belly dancer. I have no idea why she gave up on that dream.
I didn’t want to become a medical doctor (what pretty much every Turkish child’s family desires), because I didn’t want to stay in school all my life! Instead, I stayed in school all her life.
One day I want to be a carpenter. But at the moment I know nothing about woodworking.
I watch terrible TV shows (pretty much everything that involves supernatural creatures and super heroes).
